Hamburg
We have travelled to Hamburg several times in recent years, most recently four times as part of the DGMSR autumn meetings.
We like the Hanseatic flair and the distinguished reserve of Hamburg. Other characteristics we have experienced in Hamburg are a tolerant cosmopolitanism and the typical North German warmth.
Hamburg has a lot to offer that even we "southern Germans" like the architectural interesting Hafencity, the historic Speicherstadt, the Hamburg harbour with its exit from the Landungsbruecken, the Inner and Outer Alster and, as an extension of this, the Fleet district. The Elbphilharmonie has received top ratings for years and is well worth a guided tour if you can't get a ticket for a concert.
Other attractions include St Pauli, the Portuguese quarter with its countless bars and restaurants, the vibrant Schanzenviertel and, in contrast, the idyllic and trendy Blankenese. One of the highlights of our visits to Hamburg in 2012 was the fireworks at the Japanese cherry blossom festival on the Outer Alster. Our insider tips are the central Lindner Hotel and the Italian restaurant "da Enzo" in the neighbourhood.
